Email received Nov 2025:
After spotting a notice that BT planned to remove the kiosk, we asked the community in 2020 whether they wanted to keep it. The response was a clear “Yes,” with many creative ideas suggested. Abertillery and Llanhilleth Community Council kindly agreed to adopt the phone box on the community’s behalf, completing the process in November 2021 and committing to fund its renovation.
Renovations restarted in late 2024, beginning with soda blasting and the first coat of paint. After resting for a few months, the phone box received its final coat and detailing in spring 2025.
We’ve received many ideas for its future use, ranging from a community library, to seed swaps, to even installing another phone. One of the most exciting suggestions is to create a “Cwmtyleri Listening Post,” and we’ve begun recording local voices for a digital archive so that stories of life in Cwmtyleri can be shared with everyone who visits. And, according to local rumour, the famous Welsh singer Tom Jones once used this very phone.
